Pollan praises Kessler
Issues surrounding food, and the American diet, are routinely in the news these days. Dr. David Kessler, former FDA Commissioner and Author Forum guest in 2001 to discuss his book on the tobacco industry, A Question of Intent, has more recently had an impact on the current discussion of another crucial American public health issue, the obesity epidemic. His book, The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite has been praised by Michael Pollan (also a Forum guest, in 2008):
"A fascinating account of the science of human appetite, as well as its exploitation by the food industry. The End of Overeating is an invaluable contribution to the national conversation about the catastrophe that is the modern American diet."

Karen Armstrong and The Charter for Compassion
In 2008 Karen Armstrong, Forum guest in 2004, won the TED Prize
and she made a wish: for help creating, launching and propagating a Charter for Compassion. Since that day, thousands of people have contributed to the process
THE CHARTER FOR COMPASSION
Issued Nov. 12, 2009
The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves. Compassion impels us to work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of our fellow creatures, to dethrone ourselves from the centre of our world and put another there, and to honour the inviolable sanctity of every single human being, treating everybody, without exception, with absolute justice, equity and respect.
It is also necessary in both public and private life to refrain consistently and empathically from inflicting pain. To act or speak violently out of spite, chauvinism, or self-interest, to impoverish, exploit or deny basic rights to anybody, and to incite hatred by denigrating others - even our enemies - is a denial of our common humanity. We acknowledge that we have failed to live compassionately and that some have even increased the sum of human misery in the name of religion.
We therefore call upon all men and women ~ to restore compassion to the centre of morality and religion ~ to return to the ancient principle that any interpretation of scripture that breeds violence, hatred or disdain is illegitimate ~ to ensure that youth are given accurate and respectful information about other traditions, religions and cultures ~ to encourage a positive appreciation of cultural and religious diversity ~ to cultivate an informed empathy with the suffering of all human beings, even those regarded as enemies.
We urgently need to make compassion a clear, luminous and dynamic force in our polarized world. Rooted in a principled determination to transcend selfishness, compassion can break down political, dogmatic, ideological and religious boundaries. Born of our deep interdependence, compassion is essential to human relationships and to a fulfilled humanity. It is the path to enlightenment, and indispensible to the creation of a just economy and a peaceful global community.

John Updike
March 18, 1932 – January 27, 2009
We are sad to have received the news that John Updike has died after a battle with lung cancer. Mr. Updike, revered as one of America's greatest writers, was a guest of the University of Louisville Kentucky Author Forum on February 25, 1997 - in it's very first season along with Hillary Rodham Clinton, Neil Simons and Katharine Graham.
Mr. Updike was interviewed by Robert Siegel, NPR host of "All Things Considered".
According to Producer Mary Moss Greenebaum, one of the most poignant moments in the interview was Mr. Updike's description of how, when out of the country, he would sneak into public libraries, go to the section where his own writings were carefully shelved "...and check the edges of the pages to see how tattered they were." He will be sorely missed.
Garrison Keillor, a Kentucky Author Forum guest in November 2002, shared his "Appreciation for a Great Appreciator" in the Forum of the Feb. 8 Courier-Journal. This essay appeared earlier in Salon.com
ZZ Packer, who will be at Kentucky Author Forum on February 26 to interview Elizabeth Gilbert, remembers John Updike as a generous champion of young writers. Soon after its 2003 publication, ZZ Packer's story collection, Drinking Coffee Elsewhere, was personally recommended by John Updike for the "Today Show" Book Club. She remembers Mr. Updike in a January 28 online piece for The New Yorker.
